Funny Bird Quotes

Here are some of my favourite funny bird quotes. I particularly like the one by Rich Johnson, although in real life there's nothing funny about a bird flying into a window. If it does happen at your home then try putting decals on the window, or moving your feeder further away.

When I see a bird that walks like a duck and swims like a duck and quacks like a duck, I call that bird a duck. - James Whitcomb Riley

Growing up, my Mom always claimed to feel bad when a bird would slam head-first into our living room window. If she "really" felt bad, though, she'd have moved the bird feeder outside. - Rich Johnson

Eagles may soar, but weasels don't get sucked into jet engines. - John Benfield

The Pelican

A wonderful bird is the pelican

His bill will hold more than his belican.

He can take in his beak

Food enough for a week,

But I'm damned if I see how the helican.

~Dixon Lanier Merritt

Sing A Song Of Sixpence

Sing a song of sixpence,
A pocket full of rye.
Four and twenty blackbirds,
Baked in a pie.

When the pie was opened,
The birds began to sing;
Wasn't that a dainty dish,
To set before the king?

The king was in his counting house,
Counting out his money;
The queen was in the parlour,
Eating bread and honey.

The maid was in the garden,
Hanging out the clothes;
When down came a blackbird
And pecked off her nose.

Bird Songs and Nursery Rhymes

Two of the most famous bird songs and nursery rhymes relate to the blackbird:

  • Morning Has Broken, originally a Christian hymn first published in 1931 with words by English author Eleanor Farjeon and later made famous by English folk singer Cat Stevens.
  • Sing A Song of Sixpence is a well-known English nursery rhyme

Morning Has Broken - Cat Stevens

Morning has broken, like the first morning
Blackbird has spoken, like the first bird
Praise for the singing, praise for the morning
Praise for them springing fresh from the Word.

Sweet the rain's new fall, sunlit from heaven
Like the first dewfall, on the first grass
Praise for the sweetness of the wet garden
Sprung in completeness where His feet pass.

Mine is the sunlight, mine is the morning
Born of the one light, Eden saw play
Praise with elation, praise every morning
God's recreation of the new day.
